    Obama fans are shocked by Mitt Romney's dominance in debate

    I watched the Wednesday night's presidential debate with a group of wine-sipping West Coast Obama fans who were stunned by the way Mitt Romney dominated the stage.
    Over the 90 minutes of the debate, Romney submerged the right-wing image he had adopted in the Republican primary race and came off as a reasonable, moderate technocrat who differs with President Obama only about the means to get to the ends they both seek.
    For his part, Obama was pleasant and professorial, as if he were merely engaged in a ponderous academic discussion, rather than a political grudge match with enormous consequences. Faced with the chance to deliver the coup de grace to Romney’s flailing campaign, Obama appeared to have left his rhetorical weapons at the door.
    Without the president calling him on it, Romney expressed a newfound concern for the poor that differed dramatically from the disdainful tone of his private remarks about the 47% of Americans he describes as dependent, indolent victims. He rolled over debate moderator Jim Lehrer and took the fight to Obama on everything from green-energy funding to Obamacare.
    To be fair to the friends and acquaintances who gathered around the TV with me, they are not knee-jerk acolytes of the Hope and Change Messiah. Highly educated, they hold a range of political views and come from diverse backgrounds. Still, I'm pretty sure there were no Romney voters in the group -- at least not when the debate began.
    When it was over, we went around the room and everyone offered an analysis of what had just happened.
    Our hostess, Cindy, had been whispering under her breath throughout the debate that Romney was wiping the floor with Obama. Cindy is a Hillary Rodham Clinton fan and has never believed Obama possesses the same political skills as either one of the Clintons.
    This night, she said she thought the president had missed numerous opportunities to go on the attack, instead merely waiting to respond to whatever Romney threw at him. Romney, meanwhile, was smart, calculated, well-coached and commanding, she said. If she were an undecided voter and all she knew about Romney was what he showed in the debate, she would vote for him.
    Cindy, by the way, was probably the most liberal person in the room.
    Colleen observed that Romney looked like he wanted to be there while Obama did not. Her husband, Richard, was a little harder on Romney. Sure, Romney was good on the riposte, he said, but he is unconnected with the real life of the country. "Mitt Romney is as inauthentic as I can imagine," he said. After months of speaking nary a word about his healthcare program in Massachusetts, suddenly he was embracing it on debate night in his guise as a reborn moderate.
    Lisa thought body language was a huge factor. "Obama was listless," she said, while Romney was expansive and "advancing." Lisa invented a new word to describe Romney's facial expressions: "schmearziness" -- the half-smiling, smarmy look Romney gave Obama as he listened to him talk.
    Natalie thought people uneducated on the issues would have a hard time deciding who won the debate, but Ed said it was not hard to pick a winner. "Obama was in the driver's seat this morning," he said, "I don't think so anymore." For those without a command of policy details, "facts are facts, but perception is reality." The perception of Romney as a winner will inspire people to start writing checks for his campaign, Ed concluded.
    Stan agreed, observing that the big money from conservative political action committees that had been moving away from Romney will now move back.
    One big question in the room after the debate was whether Romney would get away with what amounted to another round of flip-flops and denials of plain facts -- such as his contention that his trillions of dollars of proposed revenue reductions would not reward the rich and add to the deficit.
    It is not always easy to predict how a debate performance will play among the broader electorate, but if the reaction of the folks in my friends' living room is an indicator, it appears that a race that had been running the president's way has just taken a sharp turn in the opposite direction.
    A few days ago, Obama told a crowd that Romney is a very good debater while characterizing himself as just "OK." Apparently, he was not just being modest.

    romney still has made no real mention of any level of plan or proposition on any actual topic of issue
    he refused to adhere to any level of decorum in the debate and even lied flat out on several key points
    23million out of work false that # would have to include the under-employed, the part-timers, and those that have given up

    mass. schools ranked #1 false they were ranked #6

    and im not cutting for obama he overstated his 4trillion dollar cut as well
    1trill. had already been agreed to by congress and another 1 trill. would be saved by ending wars (money that is borrowed from china and is not attributed to the national income tax basis as yet)

    i believe that romney stating that he would cut funding for programs that are for the greater good rather than increase taxes on corperations and the wealthy is his potential albatross

    obamas seemingly subdued attitude can be taken as that he would rather be elsewhere, or that he was only doing what he stated he would do and not pull out the previously played cards. which was his choking point


    now onto the point of romney refusing to layout any real and substantial idea of his would be policies he is palcing himself firmly along the lines of a leader such as adolf hitler in his rise to power

    Not only do people die without health insurance, people become disabled.

    Consider this scenario. A person has diabetes. With insurance, they check their blood sugar regularly, take their medication and see their doctor regularly to watch out for complications. Without insurance, they may or may not be able to monitor their blood sugar as well, they may not be able to afford medication and they probably won't be seeing their doctor as often, making them much more likely to get complications like heart disease, kidney disease, blindness and amputation. A person with a manageable illness who is employable with health insurance can quickly become disabled without. They go from being, in the words of Paul Ryan, a "maker" to a "taker".

    well the rich white guys out there will never need to worry even if romney does kill medicare because both medicare and private insurers pay for erectile dysfunction pills and devices like pos-t-vac that they need so badly
    yet medicare and several private insurers will not pay for insulin
    one of the 2 insulins i need is $80/ bottle twice a month
    then theres the test strips and lancets and the syringes and with out these i will fall into a coma i take insulin 4 times per day and i am not overweight or even 40 yet
    so far almost everyone in my family is diabetic and insulin dependant including my 68 year old mother who worked as a nurse for almost 40 years before she was forced to retire after emergency neck surgery
    she has moved in with me and my family because she cannot afford her meds and a home on her retirement and social security even with medicare

    so fuck the republican faithful that believes that privatizing it is a good idea
    when people cannot afford to live it is time to revolt and overthrow the government in whole and we are at that point now
    some people may wish to reread the entire declaration of independance and pay attention to the part at the end where our forefathers stated:

    I know i am fearful how half this country thinks Mitt will "save us" from the evil dark skin.

    In the past when the United States faced a crisis that could have permanently weakened us as a country, we found a great leader to see us through. I am thinking primarily of Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt. Right now we face our greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression. The country is bitterly polarized and might break up into two or more countries.

    Unfortunately, in November we will have to choose between a well meaning incompetent and an empty suit whose only obvious concern is making the rich richer.

    Although I don't usually use personal anecdotes I will this time. I was an EMT II and ran on our local ambulance for a little more than 4 years. And I was blessed because one of the other members of our crews was a pharmacist. And since we were 25 miles from the nearest hospital we had to be good not just lucky because people can die without treatment in less than 20 minutes.

    Even so in the first year we had two different patients blemish our record and go ahead and die on us. In both cases they were people suffering congestive heart failure who refused to allow us to transport them to the hospital because they didn't have insurance and couldn't afford the bills. So we left them only to end up calling the coroner the next day.

    And it was during one of those "coroner calls" when we were sitting around there protecting the death scene and the remains waiting for the coroner or undertaker that "Art" (the pharmacist) said we were missing a key point and we needed to change our procedures. And that was that these people suffering from congestive heart failure were always sitting propped up in bed when we got their, took their vitals, and they refused to go to the hospital because they didn't have insurance. And that makes perfect sense because their lungs are filling up with blood that the heart can't pump out anymore. So when they are sitting up the blood gathers in the bottom of their lungs and they can still breath through the top of their lungs and they feel Ok. But that doesn't change anything and a few hours later their lungs feel up anyway and they die.

    So Art set a protocol where we would only take vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, and chest sounds) with the patient laying flat on their backs not propped up. And he even strongly suggested we take our time taking those vital signs and make sure the patient was flat on their backs for at least 5 minutes.

    What that did was take a fairly comfortable congestive heart failure patient from a propped up position to flat on their backs where within five minutes they would experience the sensation of drowning in their own blood. And that was usually enough to convince them they needed to go to the hospital whether they had insurance or not.

    Now that was one innovation by one very talented and educated local EMT. But the point is people without insurance sit at home and die everyday in this country from conditions that are easily treatable but cost money they don't have.
